Last weekend, we set off on another Fenix Force adventure, this time heading to Wathaba, just outside of Machadodorp in Mpumalanga. With our bags packed and spirits high, we left early Friday morning, eager to settle in before sunset.
Arrival at Wathaba
The weather forecast had us a little worried—rain was predicted for the entire week—but as if nature itself welcomed us, the sun broke through just as we arrived. It was a perfect afternoon, and before even unpacking, we couldn’t resist a short walk up to the first waterfall. The view was breathtaking, giving us a glimpse of the beautiful landscapes we would explore over the next two days.
Saturday: A Hike Through Changing Landscapes

We were up before sunrise, ready for the first hike of the weekend—a 10km trail promising waterfalls, forests, and mountain views. The morning was misty, with the clouds hanging low, and we half-expected the rain to finally catch up with us.
The trail led us through lush forests, crossing rivers multiple times, and passing a few small waterfalls. As we started the climb up the back of the mountain, the sun decided to make its grand entrance. By the time we reached the top, the sky had transformed into a brilliant blue, and the heat kicked in.

Descending into a gorge, we passed through a section that had been devastated by fire. We later learned that the blaze had raged for three months, burning even underground as the tree roots smouldered. The destruction was sobering, but with the recent rains, we held hope that life would soon return.
We continued deeper into the gorge and were beyond grateful to find a cascading waterfall, the perfect place to cool off after the long, hot stretch under the sun. The water was ice-cold but utterly refreshing after the climb.
From there, the trail took us into what felt like a fairy tale—Storyland, Wonderland, and Fairyland. This magical part of the forest was filled with moss-covered trees, ferns, streams and beautiful fairy falls. It was pure enchantment.
The final stretch was a steep zigzag descent back to camp, where we rewarded ourselves with a well-earned brunch and a relaxed afternoon.
Saturday Night: The Rain Returns
That evening, we gathered once more to prepare our signature Fenix Burgers—homemade, hearty, and absolutely delicious. But the rain had other plans. Just as the fire was ready, the heavens opened and doused our coals. Determined, we moved inside, still managing to enjoy our feast.
After dinner, we made one last attempt at lighting a fire, but as soon as the flames caught, the rain returned in full force. Instead, we embraced the moment—falling asleep to the sound of raindrops on the roof, a soothing end to a day well spent.

Sunday: A Short and Scenic Farewell Hike
With the rain still lingering, we decided on a later start for our Sunday hike—a 4km trail packed with beauty. The route began with a steep incline leading to a breathtaking view before descending into a shaded forest, following the river.
At the halfway mark, we reached another stunning waterfall, but this one came with a twist—you had to swim to see it in its full glory. The water was icy, and with the misty morning air, it was a bit of a shock to the system. But the experience? Absolutely worth it. Sitting there, surrounded by nature’s untouched beauty, was the perfect way to close off our hiking adventure.

Heading Home
Back at camp, we indulged in a hot shower (one of life’s simple joys after a weekend in the wild), packed up, and hit the road. Before parting ways, we made one last stop at Millys for lunch—a tradition for many passing through Mpumalanga.
And just like that, another incredible Fenix Force adventure was in the books. The weekend had given us everything—misty mornings, sunny climbs, cold waterfall swims, a little rain, and a lot of connection.
#HikeInspireHeal
Until the next adventure!
