Shelter Rock 8 June
On an early June Saturday, a group of friends gathered to take on the challenge of Shelter Rock, a renowned 8km hike in the Magaliesberg known for its steep 400m elevation gain. Most of these hikers were familiar faces, having ventured together on previous hikes. For those unfamiliar, Shelter Rock's ascent is no small feat – it's a real uphill battle!
As we embarked on our journey, the first inclines appeared before us, and we began our ascent, one step at a time. What sets the members of the Fenix Hiking Club apart is their shared appreciation for the journey itself, prioritizing camaraderie and nature over racing to the summit.
As we climbed, I began to struggle with the demanding elevation gain. But then something extraordinary happened: Ferdie, sensing my difficulty, encouraged those who felt up to it to forge ahead while he stayed behind with me. He offered his walking stick and made sure I refueled with an energy bar before we continued, his reassuring words urging me on. With the unwavering support of my fellow hikers, I pressed onward, knowing I wasn't alone in this challenge.
Upon reaching the summit, the feeling of accomplishment was indescribable. Gazing out over the valley below, I marveled at how far we had come. From our vantage point, we watched vultures soar gracefully on the thermals, a sight made all the more breathtaking by our elevation.
For anyone contemplating joining a group like the Fenix Hiking Club, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. Beyond the breathtaking vistas, it's the bonds of friendship and support forged with each step that truly make the journey unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to Ferdie and my fellow hikers for ensuring I made it up and down Shelter Rock safely – you're all true legends
