Castle Gorge 20 January 2024
Early on a fresh Saturday morning, the anticipation of adventure filled the air as ten enthusiastic hikers gathered at the Mooinooi post office in the North West Province for the inaugural Fenix Hike. Warm greetings were exchanged, setting the tone for an exciting day ahead as we embarked on our journey to Maretelwane, the starting point for our hike to Castle Gorge.
The initial stretch of the trail offered a gentle introduction, allowing us to warm up our legs. Reaching the first pool, we paused to soak in the scenery, capturing a group photo to commemorate the beginning of our expedition. Our ascent continued, revealing a slight incline that challenged some with a pleasant burn in their legs, while others were captivated by the panoramic views.
For a brief moment I was a little less popular after we descended into the gorge, and encountering a steeper climb. But any fatigue was forgotten as we reached the summit, greeted by the awe-inspiring beauty of Castle Gorge—a cascade of brown granite adorned with lush greenery and a three tier waterfall. Venturing down to the base of the waterfall, some hikers indulged in a refreshing shower, immersing themselves in the natural surroundings.
Our journey then led us to Piranha Pools, a tranquil spot where we cooled off with a delightful swim and enjoyed picnic. Moving on to the main pool and waterfall, daring individuals embraced an adrenaline rush, leaping from an 8-meter cliff into the crystal-clear water. Laughter echoed as some opted for a slightly tamer 6-meter jump, myself included.
Returning towards the first pool, the cool water provided a welcome relief from the warming day. After lingering for a while, we retraced our steps to the cars. However, the camaraderie forged during the hike lingered, and the group decided to extend the day by grabbing lunch together at a nearby spot.
Friendship and companionship were the true highlights of the day, with new bonds formed as we collaborated to conquer the invigorating 10-kilometer trail. The memories of Castle Gorge and the shared adventure will undoubtedly remain etched in our hearts.
